Combined Presidents and Curators Report – AGM, 2011
This year has been very successful and busy. Both the Society and the Museum are becoming well known and appreciated. Our participation in the Heritage Protection Sub-Committee, and Appin Bicentenary and our support for the Soldiers’ Settlement Museum have demonstrated our ongoing commitment to preserving Campbelltown’s precious heritage.
During the last twelve months over 1200 people have been through Glenalvon – including 13 tour groups, 5 schools, 4 Glenalvon descendants families, 7 weddings and/or photographs. A further 250 people attended our 3 major outside events this year – 2 Dr. Ivor G Thomas Memorial lectures and the Cavalcade of History and Fashion. These figures do not include the many visitors and guests to our Society Members’ meetings. As a Society we have held 4 stalls, and 1 by Marie and Learna.
For the rest of the year, until December we have 4 group bookings, 1 wedding and 1 photos, 3 school groups and Marie is running a stall at the Family History Seminar.
John White and I have been to Collections MOSAiC Plus computer training courses, Clarice and I went to a free training seminar at the Powerhouse, and I went to a weekend training conference at Galong near Yass. We were successful in winning grants and bursaries to cover most of the training costs, as well as a small grant towards publishing the 3 Grist Mills.
The Council has spent a lot of money on repairing the roof over the back terrace, the curtains, pest inspection and treatment, and salt treatment for the cellar and the lowest courses of stonework.
The garden team have worked very hard through all kinds of weather to make sure the grounds always look fabulous.
Great progress has been made at Glenalvon during the year. The house room displays have been upgraded on as ongoing project – and the Dining Room looks particularly good. Of course, the biggest improvement was the curtains upstairs!! We were very grateful for the anonymous donation to purchase the curtain holdbacks which complete the period appearance. Other generous people, including Ken Green who is sponsoring the lamp collection, have been generous with their funds and time.
Work on the collection and displays is always going on – and is much appreciated by our visitors. Clarice and I have started on cataloguing the Agricultural equipment display items and will upgrade the information labels as the last step in the process. Many people have donated items to our collections during the year, so every time you go into Glenalvon look carefully and see what is new.
My thanks must go to our volunteers who have made all our activities possible and to our members for their ongoing support. There are too many people to name individually – everyone helps keep the Society and the Museum going – without their help we would be in trouble financially and operationally.
I have enjoyed the last 3 years as President and thank most sincerely all the members of the Executive and Museum Committees for their support, dedication and passion.
